What are crop circles?

Crop circles are patterns that appear in fields. The pattern is created when certain areas of the crops are tamped down, but others are left intact. The edge is so clean that it looks like it was created with a machine. Even though the stalks are bent, they are not damaged. Most of the time, the crop continues to grow as normal.

Sometimes, the patterns are simple circles. In other instances, they are elaborate designs consisting of several interconnecting, geometric shapes.

Farmers have reported finding strange circles in their fields for centuries. The earliest mention of a crop circle dates back to the 1500s. A 17th century English woodcut shows a devilish creature making a crop circle. People who lived in the area called the creature the "mowing devil."

In an 1880 issue of the journal Nature, amateur scientist John Rand Capron reported on a formation near Guildford, Surrey, in the south of England. He described his finding as "a field of standing wheat considerably knocked about, not as an entirety, but in patches forming, as viewed from a distance, circular spots." He went on to say, "... I could not trace locally any circumstances accounting for the peculiar forms of the patches in the field ... They were suggestive to me of some cyclonic wind action..."

Mentions of crop circles were sporadic until the 20th century, when circles began appearing in the 1960s and '70s in England and the United States. But the phenomenon didn't gain attention until 1980, when a farmer in Wiltshire county, England, discovered three circles, about 60 feet (18 meters) across each, in his oat crops. UFO researchers and media descended on the farm, and the world first began to learn about crop circles.

By the 1990s, crop circles had become something of a tourist attraction. In 1990 alone, more than 500 circles emerged in Europe. Within the next few years, there were thousands. Visitors came from around the world to see them. Some farmers even charged admission to their mysterious attractions.

Starting home decorating can be full of so many emotions. On one hand, you can’t wait to get started and on the other, you can. There is a lot of work to be done and all of it is before you. Sometimes, there is no way of knowing where to start or what to do or even how to decorate.

First, before anything else, you will need to look at a budget. As much as we would all love to have an endless supply of funds to decorate with, that just isn’t realistic. You will have a cap on your decorating budget so actually look at what it is now before you shoot for a design that is just out of your price range. Once you have your budget, add a few hundred dollars on top of that for mistakes or finds that you just couldn’t pass by.

Now that you have your budget, start making a list of rooms in your home that needs to be decorated. Obviously, if your budget is limited, you are not going to be able to do all of them over the course of a few months so you will need to prioritize your rooms. Generally, the first rooms that you will want to focus on are the high traffic rooms. These are, after all, the rooms that most guests see when they come over so you will want to have them looking their best.

The other rooms can be decorated at a later time and as money allows so don’t stress if you can’t get them done right away. I have heard stories of homes taking several years to get from point A to finished.

Okay, so you have your budget, your ideas and your priority list. Now it is time to get decorating. The first thing that you will want to do is decide on a design for your home decor. Generally, when you design your decor you will keep the same design throughout the home especially in rooms where you can’t close the door to the theme. The last thing that you will want to do is have a country-style kitchen with an Asian themed dining room. There are several different types of design styles and really it is a matter of personal choice. Lately, there has been a real shift to eclectic and modern decor and you can add elements of both into just about any style.

Once you have decided on your style, you can pull out that notebook once more and start sketching out the room. Make a few notes on what furniture are a must have for the room and also identify which items must be brand new and which items can be refurbished pieces. Both can make wonderful statements to a room but you can find some wonderful quality pieces through garage sales, auctions and flea markets for only a fraction of the cost to buy new. Trust me, when it comes to meeting a budget, used can be your best friend.

Color is one of the most important areas for launching your decor and it should be one of the first steps that you take when starting to decorate your home. Many people feel that your starting place should be your floors and walls but it isn’t the only rule for creating your color palette. Instead, you can start with an accent piece and work out from there, choosing your colors for your flooring and walls after you have pulled out the colors from the accent. The end result is really what you are going for so it doesn’t matter how you started the journey.

After you are finished with the walls, it is time to start decorating the space. Hopefully, by this point you have been going to auctions and flea markets and you have the furniture bought and refurbished the way that you want it. You can set up the room, and then add the accessories. Remember that you don’t need to go with traditional accents or furniture. An old chest can work well as a table, and an old door can be refurbished into a headboard. How to Coordinate Shoes to Your Outfit?

Lesson 1:

Before we talk about how to match shoes to outfits, it is important to emphasize the word "MATCH". Why?  When no matching effort shows, the whole look is out of tune.

Just look at Victoria Beckham:  Her wind coat is well cut and classic.  So are her shoes.  However, the hard coal-like black shoes look heavy against the light color and texture of her wind coat.  Furthermore, the warm gold-colored buttons look like a clique of honey bees swarming against her heavy shoes full of sorrow.

Lesson 2:

Now we can talk about HOW to match shoes to complete the outfit instead of ruining it.

Shoes are not supposed to match the top, but the bottom.  Otherwise, the whole look appears to be "chopped up".  Nicky hilton is "chopped" into three pieces here:  the top black part (a Jack the Ripper sweater), the grey middle part (Saran Wrap leggings), and the black bottom part (regulation issue commando boots).  Since the color of her pants are lighter than her top, she should, for example, wear a pair of shoes of a lighter grey color than her pants.  In this way, the continuation of the color lightening from top to bottom is not disrupted.  Unfortunately, Nicky abruptly compressed herself betwee top and bottom with two black heavy-weight bookends:  her black top and her black Gestapo parade boots.

Similarly, Kesha should wear a pear of silver shoes to match the lower end of her dress to let the color change FLOW (like a rainbow's chromatic continuum) instead of throwing patches of one color here and there like a child randomly spreading bread crumbs from one end of the table to the other end instead of keeping the bread well behaved on one corner of its plate.

Victoria's dress is beautiful, but wearing an outfit of entirely one color is "elementary level" fashion style.  Since she has a beautiful red leather bag, she can match her shoes with it instead of wearing a pair of BLACK shoes with a BLACK dress to make herself look like a black widow with red blood stain on her hands.


Lesson 3:

Foot Shape VS Shoe Shape:
After you choose the right matching shoes, it is crucial that you double check whether the shoes actually look good on you.

This may sound redundant:  Of course I'll check whether I look good in something!
It is actually an easy slip for people to miss. For example:

We don't have to always wear shoes the exact same color as our skirts/pants.  What we really look for is not tooth for tooth or eye for eye, but butter for bread and fries for burger.  That is, the essence of coordination is echoing with the right parts.  Echoing is not limited to patterns and colors, but also tone, because at the end of the day, color is just part of tone.  Jennifer's shoes are not grey but a greyish beige color.  Since the tone of the color is grey, the shoes match her skirt well, and thus coordinates smoothly with her whole outfit.

(7) Match your shoes with accessories (belt, purse, jewelry, etc):

Lauren Conrad's outfit is one of my favorites so far.  I do not know what she is dressed up for -- a party, a date, etc?  But her belt, purse and shoes are impeccably coordinated both in color and in material/texture.  She did not fall into the stereotypical vanity trap of over decorating herself with more than one flower.  Thus, how can anyone not smile at a young female flower awesomely color coordinated to the roots of her toes?

For the opening ceremony of the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, the Chinese actress chose a one-sleeved, imperial yellow silk gown embroidered with dragons and cascading ocean waves, instantly declaring her proud heritage (no more shouts of "Where are you from?" on the red carpet) and flooring the fashion press even more than usual. The Laurence Xu creation was no fluke: Shifting fluently between indie designers and European haute couture, Fan already had established herself as one of fashion's most intriguing figures with her bold, flamboyant choices. But her Cannes debut launched her into the style stratosphere.

American audiences finally will see Fan on the big screen in summer 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past as the teleporting mutant Blink. She's "extremely focused," says director Bryan Singer. "She inhabits the screen like a true star." (Fan also appears in the Chinese version of Iron Man 3, which scored a $63.5 million opening weekend.) STORY: 'Iron Man 3' Criticized for Scaling Back Chinese Actors' Screen Time

"[Compared to other Asian stars], Fan seems to have the most fun with fashion," says Catherine Kallon, founder of the U.K.-based blog Red Carpet Fashion Awards. "She's more of a risk-taker." Fan understands her influence -- she recently was named No. 1 on Forbes China's Celebrity 100 -- but says luxury brands can't take Chinese consumers for granted. "There was a period when China was very label-conscious. But now I think Chinese women will use more of their creativity," says the star, who once showed up in the front row at Elie Saab with one of the designer's beaded cardigans wrapped around her head like a turban. "There are more people who really know fashion as a lifestyle, an attitude. China is catching up."

East African Rift Valley, Kenya

The East African Rift is one of the great tectonic features of Africa, caused by fracturing of the Earth’s crust. This astronaut photograph of the Eastern Branch of the Rift (near Kenya’s southern border) highlights the classical geologic structures associated with a tectonic rift valley.

On one side of the rift lies the Nubian (or African) tectonic plate, which includes the older continental crust of Africa. The Somalian plate—which is moving away in the other direction—lies to the other side and includes the Horn of Africa. (Note that the image is oriented so that north is to the lower left.) Together with the associated Ethiopian Rift, the tectonic boundary stretches from the southern Red Sea to central Mozambique.

Landscapes in the rift valley can appear confusing. The most striking features in this view are the numerous, nearly parallel, linear fault lines that occupy the floor of the valley. Shadows cast by the late afternoon Sun make the fault scarps more prominent. These steps in the landscape are caused by slip motion along individual faults and are aligned with the north-south axis of the valley (lower left to top right). A secondary trend of less linear faults cuts the main fault at an acute angle, with the fault steps throwing large shadows.

The Eastern Branch of the East African Rift is arid. (By contrast, the Western Branch lies on the border of the Congolese rainforest). Evidence of this can be seen in the red, salt-loving algae of the shallow and salty Lake Magadi (image center). A neighboring small lake to the north (to the left of Magadi in the image) has deeper water and appears dark. The white salt deposits on the dry part of the Lake Magadi floor host a few small commercial salt pans. The lakes appear to be located where the main and secondary fault trends intersect.

The East African rift system is marked by substantial volcanic activity, including lavas erupted from fissures along the rift in the region. Much of the faulting observed in this image cuts through such lavas. Elsewhere along the rift system, individual volcanoes form. Some of those volcanoes are very large, including Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. In this image, a volcano (Lenderut) appears to be superimposed on the faults, indicating that it is younger than the faults it covers. Deeply eroded slopes also suggest that the volcano has not been active for a long time.

The largest vegetated area is the green floor of a valley that drains an area large enough for water to exist near the surface. For a sense of scale, the vegetated valley floor is 17 kilometers long (10.5 miles).

Life Span of a Giant Panda

About 300 giant pandas live in captivity; no more than 3,000 exist in the wild. Infancy

A giant panda cub is ready to enter the world after gestating in his mother’s womb for 95 to 160 days. Because a newborn giant panda is born hairless, nearly helpless and the size of a stick of butter, his mother devotes every waking moment to her baby; she doesn’t even leave the den, usually a hollow tree trunk or cave, to eat or drink for days after the birth. However, mother begins to leave the comfort of the den when the cub’s teeth appear around 14 weeks. He begins walking at 21 weeks. He'll nurse until the ripe old age of 18 months. It's time to go off on his own so mama can prepare for her next cub.

Habitat

The giant panda’s natural habitat is the high bamboo forest of western China; 45 percent of the total wild population of giant pandas lives in China’s Minshan Mountains – the highest density of pandas in the wild (see ref 5). This region once provided an abundance of their only food source – bamboo, and the mountains made a protective barrier between the cold northern climate and the wet southern half of China. Unfortunately, the giant panda’s natural habitat has rapidly shrunk since the early 1900s due to human population growth, hunting, logging and land clearing.

Adulthood

Giant pandas are solitary mammals, preferring to spend their days moving about in search of bamboo. One of the only times during the year they will encounter and interact with other pandas is during the brief mating season between the months of March and May. With all of their “me” time, they eat. Up to 14 hours a day they spend noshing. The average adult panda consumes 25 to 40 pounds of bamboo each day.

Life Expectancy

Giant pandas live between 14 and 20 years in the wild and up to 35 years in captivity. A 2004 study by the Chinese Department of Forestry estimated the population of wild pandas to be around 1,600. Other estimates figure the population between 2,000 and 3,000 giant pandas. Conservation and preservation efforts are in place to protect this extremely endangered species from extinction.
