Ash Flat was established in 1856, aptly named by local residents in honor of a nearby grove of ash trees. Ash Flat is a city in Fulton County, Arkansas and Sharp County, Arkansas counties in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The population was 977 at the United States Census, 2000. The city is the county seat of Sharp County.

Due in part to the remoteness of the area, Ash Flat check more became the center of trade for nearby farmers soon after its formation.
