The long, slow decline of alt-weeklies
Alternative weekly colossus Boston Phoenix cracked and fell yesterday, ceasing publication after 47 years. According to a Phoenix executive quoted in the obituary in today’s Boston Globe, the alternative weekly was losing more than $1 million a year, and a format switch last fall from newsprint to glossy had failed to attract the sort of national advertising it desired.
Once one of the leading alt-weeklies in the nation, the dead paper leaves behind $1.2 million in debt and roughly $500,000 in assets. The fact that its owner didn’t — or couldn’t — sell the publication to cover some of its debt signals the illness of the greater alternative weekly market.
Like its daily newspaper counterpart, the alt-weekly has enjoyed a terrible half-decade of plummeting revenues, circulation and page counts in the 100-plus markets currently served. One large chain that owned papers in Chicago, Washington, Atlanta, Charlotte and elsewhere filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and was eventually spun apart, but that financial disaster was as much about clueless proprietors overleveraging themselves as it was the decay of the alt-weekly business model.
The formula, pioneered by the Village Voice in the 1950s, finessed by the Phoenix in the 1960s and perfected by the Chicago Reader, the Phoenix New Times and others in the 1970s, became such a cinch that know-nothing bar owners and recent college graduates (or dropouts!) eventually made millions off it. Some papers, like the Phoenix New Times, built immense chains from the links they forged and acquired. The formula connected underserved readers with overcharged advertisers in both compact, urban settings like New York and Washington and sunbelt expanses like Phoenix and Dallas. In 2005, the two largest alt-weekly chains, anchored respectively by the Phoenix New Times and the Voice, combined to create a company valued by the participants at $400 million, with annual revenues of $180 million. Newspapers started in bar booths had become big business, but like many of the daily newspaper merger and acquisition deals going down during same period, this deal also proved too rich.
Many former alt-weekly editors would like to persuade you that their cutting take on city politics and the arts combined with their dedication to the feature form won readers. Actually, it was the whole gestalt that made the publications work. Comprehensive listings paired with club and concert ads to both entertain and help readers plan their week. How to Crochet Your Own Hair Snoods?
Hear the word "snood" and you might think of an addicting computer game with furry little monster faces. But it's actually an old-school hair accessory that resembles a lacy net or bag. In olden times, ladies sometimes wore a snood attached to a headband or a hat. If you want to re-create the Renaissance in your life, learn how to crochet your own hair snoods. Once you get the hang of the basic pattern, embellish it with beads, pearls or new and different yarns to bring this piece of hair history into the modern age.
1. Start with a few chain stitches; make four of them and join them together with a slip stitch to form a circle. This will be the base of your snood. When you crochet it like this, you will be able to try it on as you go, which will come in handy later.
2. Chain three, which counts as a double crochet stitch. Make 11 double crochet stitches into the center of the circle you made in Step 1, then join to the top of your initial chain-three stitch. This will make the base of your snood.
3. For round two, increase the circumference of your snood. To do this, chain three again to act as your first double crochet. Chain one more and then double crochet into the next stitch; chain one, double crochet into the following stitch. Repeat this pattern around so you have a total of 12 double crochets and 12 chain-one stitches.

The Truth About Eyelash Enhancing Serums
I have to admit, I didn’t want to take this assignment at first.
Before a few months ago I had never used an eyelash enhancer and when I was asked to review them, I told my editors "I don't feel comfortable reviewing something I've never personally used".
But then something happened... My friend Nancy Leggars was visiting me from San Diego and there was something different about Nancy.. Here eyelashes were huge!
I mean they were so long she could barely wear her glasses.. I totally thought she was wearing falsies.. But no, Nancy told me she had been using an eyelash enhancer!
After that, I was convincd I need to try these for myself and take the assignment. Here's what I found..
As you've probably seen, women are reporting amazing things about eyelash enhancers. Not only are women using them to repair damaged lashes back to their full potential, but also to support new lash growth, making their existing lashes longer, darker and much fuller... and let me tell you.. these things are noticeable.
But the real questions is.. which ones REALLY work? Companies looking to cash in on this cosmetics craze are releasing all sorts of eyelash treatments and many are not what they seem.
Naturally, these incredible claims have caused some women to be skeptical of the products and their promises, and a quick glance at the research shows why:
* They might not work- this is probably the biggest reason why some women are reluctant to try an enhancer, and with good reason: many of the products on the market don’t contain the proper ingredients in the proper concentration to produce results.
* They can be expensive- some enhancers can cost $125+ for a four week treatment!
* Some products can cause discoloration or irritation- thicker lashes aren’t much help if they’re attached to red, puffy eyes.
But how can you know which products are the good ones? How can you tell an eyelash enhancer that works from those that are simply a waste of money?
We know it's not easy to find an eyelash enhancer that works, and we felt like women shouldn’t have to hire a research assistant just to get one that produces results. That’s why we reviewed the products ourselves.
How We Researched
For an eyelash enhancer to work, it has to use the right amount of active ingredients that are responsible for growth.
Now, these ingredients are not cheap and many brands cut cost by only using meniscal amounts.
How do you tell which brands use the right amount of active ingredient?
It's easy. The higher up on the ingredient list the active ingredient is, the more of it is in the formula.
We looked at 47 different brands in all to find out which ones really use the right amount of active ingredient and have also been proven to grow your lashes.

And boy do these brands work! Upon reading user stories of these products, we heard nothing but amazing results! Women report these products to do exactly what they claim. Many women with damaged eyelashes say these products have caused incredible results and that they would gladly spend the high price to buy them again. Other women say they've used other eyelashes with no result, but these products worked where those did not. Some women even report that these products work so well, they were able to stop wearing mascara to show off their eyelashes.
