Selecting The Right Type Of Earrings For Yourself

From Time immemorial earrings have been in trend. Being such a wonderful and versatile accessory, through centuries men and women have used them to adorn themselves, selecting particular designs for particular occasions and face types. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to know how to select the best pair of earrings for you? Here are some tips from my side.

Earrings by closure - Earrings come in many different types - studs, hoops, danglers, chandelier and clip-on. Studs and hoops typically have a backing made of metal or plastic to hold the earring in place, while danglers will hook into the hole and hang without a backing. Sling backs or fold backs are danglers which will have clasps that snap into place. Chandeliers and discs can be studs or danglers. Choose stud backing for earrings that are heavy and loop dangles for ones that are light. Heavier ones will need additional backing or a chain that goes over the ears.

Earrings by Face Type - If you have a round, short face, long earrings like chandeliers and chain earrings may look awkward and so will tiny studs. The best type of earrings for you is a stud with a small dangler that will balance out your face. Long faces may dwarf a pair of stud earrings.  If you have a long neck chain earrings or tassels that gently graze your neckline will look beautiful on you. Long earrings also help slenderize chubby cheeks and faces. If your face is more on the (inverted) triangular side then flat disc earrings and hoops will look good.

Earrings by hairstyle - Consider some dangles and medium sized studs when wearing your hair up and away from your face. Large earrings might look too clunky with your updos unless you are in very casual, bohemian surroundings. While wearing your hair down, if your hair is long enough (till the shoulders or below) choose a larger earring design.  Earrings that are too small will simply get lost inside your hair and not be seen at all.  Chandelier earrings are an excellent option when wearing your hair down. Hoops and discs look good with plaits and ponytails.

Earrings by wardrobe - If you have a conservative wardrobe for the office, then you might want to stick with simple studs and small hoops to go with your trousers, skirts and sarees. Here a simple diamond or gold stud is your best bet. On the other hand, dangling and chandelier earrings are fabulous to wear with tunics, dresses or jeans for outings. Jhumkas and earrings that cover the ear are great with Indian outfits like salwars and sarees. Novelty earrings, mismatched earrings (different yet coordinated earrings on different ears) or coupled earrings (a cat and mouse) are best suited for pairing with casual outfits.

Choosing the right earrings will make a great impact on those who see you for they can help draw attention away from blemishes, complement your hairstyle, and help lengthen or slenderize your face.
